Distance Learning Students & Faculty

Students enrolled in Distance Learning programs can access a wide range of electronic resources off-campus, such as eBooks, eJournals, and databases, to support their educational and research endeavors.

This guide will assist you:

  • Discover the available electronic resources

  • Search for the necessary materials effectively

  • Gain access via OpenAthens

Faculty members involved in Distance Learning programs can also utilize this guide to access e-resources in the same way.

 

Searching E-Resources

 

To locate the necessary bibliography, consider using one of the following options:

  • UNIC Library Search: This tool allows you to search all library collections and resources simultaneously, including print books, eBooks, journals, and databases.

  • eCollections (A-Z): Select a specific collection or database that focuses on a particular subject area or includes publications from specific publishers for a more targeted search.

  • Once the search results page opens, if needed you can add more keywords and/or use the option in the left-hand column to refine your search further.

*Remember to enclose any terminology or phrases consisting of two or more words in double quotes.

 

  • Under Availability section, you can search for electronic material provided. You can select Available Online and click on Apply Filters to narrow your search to online resources only.

  • Choose the e-book (or other material) labeled as Available Online and either read it directly online or download it for offline access.

*Please note that different Publishers have different rules about how much e-book content you can download or copy.

 

When the OpenAthens box appears, select your status (e.g., UNIC Students) and log in using your UNIC email and password. For detailed instructions, please refer to the Off-campus Access section of this guide.
  • You can also explore various tools for sharing, citing, creating folders or copying article links, which you will find in the right-hand column.

  • Under Resource Type you have the option to look for other types of resources. For example, select Articles and click Apply Filters.

Electronic Collections & Databases

 

To search a specific collection or database, or to view available collections and databases related to your subject, click on eCollections (A-Z) on the UNIC Library website's homepage.

  • You can search by title alphabetically by expanding the list with the relevant letter, or by entering keywords in the search box on the left.

  • Alternatively, you can search by subject by selecting Subject in the filters on the left, then expand the list by clicking on the subject areas.

  • Review the description and select an appropriate collection or database for your search by clicking on its title. Most databases offer helpful features like Advanced Search, Filters, and Help options to assist you in refining your search.

When the OpenAthens box appears, select your status (e.g., UNIC Students) and log in using your UNIC email and password. For detailed instructions, please refer to the Off-campus Access section of this guide.
Gaining Access

To access the Library's electronic resources remotely (off-campus), you need to be enrolled at the University for the current semester.

Use your UNIC email credentials (email address and password) to sign in.

 

Here is a brief outline of the steps to follow:

  • Locate the resource (e-book, article) on the Library webpage and click on the full-text option (Available Online, PDF Full-Text)

  • Select your status (student, faculty & staff)

  • Log in using your UNIC email address and password to gain access through the University of Nicosia

  • Select the desired resource and click on Available Online (PDF or other full-text options)

  • Choose your Status (Student, Faculty & Staff, etc.)

  • You should now have full-text access to the resource. You can either read it online or download it as a PDF.

Introduction to RefWorks

 

RefWorks is a free, web-based reference management tool available to all students and faculty at UNIC. It helps you organize your research by managing your citations effectively.


By using RefWorks, you can streamline your research process and ensure your citations are accurate and properly formatted.

  • collect, organize, store & share bibliographic references by importing them from web-based data services or our online catalogue or by entering manually
  • insert correctly formatted citations into your paper using Reference Citation Manager (RCM) add-on in Microsoft Word 2016,  or newer versions including Word on Microsoft 365, or, for older versions of MSWord, install Write-N-Cite
  • generate your bibliographic reference list automatically in Harvard or APA style...and many other styles as well.

Collaborations with other Libraries

 

For hardcopy material that is not available online through UNIC Library, you may visit other academic libraries in your area. Most of them will probably allow you to use print resources within their premises.

The UNIC Library collaborates with the libraries below:

  • University of Cyprus Library
  • Cyprus University of Technology Library
  • Open University of Cyprus Library
  • European University Cyprus Library
  • Library of Neapolis University

If you are in Cyprus, you are allowed to borrow material from the above libraries. Contact the UNIC Library (libithelp@unic.ac.cy ) for further information.

Greece

The Library collaborates also with some academic libraries in Greece. If you are interested in a particular library or if you need to check whether there is any library in your area that we collaborate with, please contact us (libdistance@unic.ac.cy).
