Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Professor Emeritus Nayia Roussou and the Department of Communications of the University of Nicosia

On Monday 22^nd of April, Last Monday, the Department of Communications of the University of Nicosia (School of Humanities and Social Sciences) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Professor Emerita Nayia Roussou at the UNIC - Library and Information Centre.

We are pleased to announce that the UNIC Library will receive a generous donation of Professor Roussou's personal collection of books on mass media.

The following people were present at the signing ceremony:

The Department of Communications, to which Professor Roussou has donated a large part of her personal archive, was represented by Professor Mike Hajimichael, Head of the Department of Communications, and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences by the Dean of the School, Professor Klimis Mastoridis.

The UNIC Library was represented by Ms Dia Kytta, Research Liaison Librarian.

Nayia Roussou has worked for many years at the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, her last post being that of Head of International and Public Relations. She has also Mass Media and Public Relations at colleges, the Police Academy and the Higher Technological Institute, Cyprus. Between 1995 and 2013 she was a professor at the University of Nicosia, where she also headed the Communications Department. She has written and published prose and poetry and was awarded the Cyprus State Prize for Poetry. She has researched and published articles, book chapters and monographs on the media. Major areas of her contribution to media research and publications include Television and Identity of Young People, Women and the Media, TV Violence and Children and the Internet and Young People. She was active in the European COST A-20 programme between 2000 and 2006. She has been honoured for her contribution to culture and literature in Rhodes, Crete and Athens and has several entries in the International Who Is Who publications, both general and special publications on women, and poets and poetry.

Μνημόνιο Συμφωνίας μεταξύ της Ομότιμη Καθηγήτριας Νάγια Ρούσσου και του Τμήματος Επικοινωνίας του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας (Σχολή Ανθρωπιστικών Σπουδών και Κοινωνικών Επιστημών).

Τη Δευτέρα 22 Απριλίου, το Τμήμα Επικοινωνίας του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας (Σχολή Ανθρωπιστικών Σπουδών και Κοινωνικών Επιστημών) υπέγραψε Μνημόνιο Συμφωνίας (MOU) με την Ομότιμη Καθηγήτρια Νάγια Ρούσσου στην Βιβλιοθήκη και Κέντρο Πληροφόρησης του πανεπιστημίου.

Είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να ανακοινώσουμε ότι η Βιβλιοθήκη του UNIC θα λάβει μια γενναιόδωρη δωρεά από την προσωπική συλλογή βιβλίων της Καθηγήτριας Ρούσσου με θέμα Μέσα Μαζικής Ενημέρωσης.

Κατά την τελετή υπογραφής της συμφωνίας ήταν παρόντες οι ακόλουθοι:

Η ομότιμη καθηγήτρια Νάγια Ρούσσου και ο κ. Γιάννης Ρούσσος.

Το Τμήμα Επικοινωνίας, στο οποίο η Καθηγήτρια Ρούσσου έχει δωρίσει μεγάλο μέρος του προσωπικού της αρχείου, εκπροσωπήθηκε από τον Καθηγητή Mike Hajimichael, Επικεφαλής του Τμήματος Επικοινωνίας, και τη Σχολή Ανθρωπιστικών Σπουδών και Κοινωνικών Επιστημών από τον Κοσμήτορα της Σχολής, Καθηγητή Κλήμη Μαστορίδη.

Η Βιβλιοθήκη του UNIC εκπροσωπήθηκε από την κ. Ντία Κύττα, βιβλιοθηκονόμο Διασύνδεσης Έρευνας.

Η Νάγια Ρούσσου έχει εργαστεί για πολλά χρόνια στο Ραδιοφωνικό Ίδρυμα Κύπρου (ΡΙΚ), με τελευταία θέση αυτή της επικεφαλής των Διεθνών και Δημοσίων Σχέσεων. Έχει επίσης εργαστεί στο πεδίο των Μέσων Μαζικής Ενημέρωσης και Δημόσιων Σχέσεων σε κολέγια, στην Αστυνομική Ακαδημία και στο Ανώτατο Τεχνολογικό Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου. Μεταξύ 1995 και 2013 ήταν καθηγήτρια στο Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας, όπου ήταν επίσης επικεφαλής του Τμήματος Επικοινωνίας. Έχει γράψει και δημοσιεύσει πεζά και ποιήματα και της απονεμήθηκε το Κρατικό Βραβείο Ποίησης της Κύπρου. Έχει ερευνήσει και δημοσιεύσει άρθρα, κεφάλαια βιβλίων και μονογραφίες για τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης. Κύριοι τομείς της συνεισφοράς της στην έρευνα και τις δημοσιεύσεις στα ΜΜΕ είναι η Τηλεόραση και η ταυτότητα των νέων, οι Γυναίκες και τα ΜΜΕ, η τηλεοπτική βία και τα παιδιά και το Διαδίκτυο και οι νέοι. Συμμετείχε ενεργά στο ευρωπαϊκό πρόγραμμα COST A-20 από το 2000 έως το 2006. Έχει τιμηθεί για τη συμβολή της στον πολιτισμό και τα γράμματα στη Ρόδο, την Κρήτη και την Αθήνα και έχει πολλές καταχωρήσεις στις διεθνείς εκδόσεις Who Is Who, τόσο σε γενικές όσο και σε ειδικές εκδόσεις για τις γυναίκες, καθώς και για τους ποιητές και την ποίηση.

Mr John Vickers Book collection at UNIC Library

We are delighted to announce that we have accepted a donation of a book collection from Mr John Vickers.

The collection includes rare and valuable titles and editions, including biographies of famous music artists.

Είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να ανακοινώσουμε ότι δεχθήκαμε τη δωρεά της εξαιρετικής συλλογής των βιβλίων του κ. John Vickers.

Η συλλογή περιλαμβάνει σπάνιους και πολύτιμους τίτλους και εκδόσεις, συμπεριλαμβανομένων βιογραφιών διάσημων μουσικών καλλιτεχνών.

«Η Αλίκη και ο Φίλιππος ταξιδεύουν την Βιβλιοθήκη»

Η Βιβλιοθήκη και Κέντρο Πληροφόρησης του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας γέμισε με φωνές και πολλά χαρούμενα πρόσωπα! Οι μικροί μας φίλοι πέρασαν ένα υπέροχο πρωινό Κυριακής και μέσω του προγράμματος “Η Αλίκη και ο Φίλιππος ταξιδεύουν τη Βιβλιοθήκη”, ανακαλύψαν τη μαγεία του βιβλίου και της ανάγνωσης!

Μέσα από δραστηριότητες όπως κυνήγι θησαυρού, δημιουργική γραφή και θεατρικές μεταφορές κειμένων, τα παιδιά είχαν την ευκαιρία να εξερευνήσουν έννοιες όπως η κριτική σκέψη, η λογοτεχνική δημιουργία και η ελεύθερη έκφραση. Με αυτό τον τρόπο γιορτάσαμε και τιμήσαμε την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Παιδικού Βιβλίου & την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Βιβλίου, όπως κάνουμε τα τελευταία χρόνια με τόση πολύ αγάπη.

Η εκδήλωση εκτελέστηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία και έλαβε θετικές κριτικές. Το προσωπικό της Βιβλιοθήκης επίσης έλαβε συγχαρητήρια από τους παρευρισκόμενους για την οργάνωση και την διεξαγωγή. Την εκδήλωση παρακολούθησαν περίπου 70 άτομα. Ήταν τιμή μας που η Διευθύντρια των Βιβλιοθηκών μας εκπροσώπευσε την ΚΕΒΕΠ και την Βιβλιοθήκη του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας σε εκπομπή στο ΡΙΚ και μίλησε για την εκδήλωση, τον σκοπό και την σημασία της. Το ΡΙΚ επισκέφθηκε την Βιβλιοθήκη και τράβηξε πλάνα από την εκδήλωση και τον χώρο.

Ευχαριστούμε όλους όσους παρευρέθηκαν και μας τίμησαν, για την μεγάλη αγκαλιά που νιώσαμε χθες, καθώς και για όλα τα θετικά σχόλια και την απέραντη αγάπη που λάβαμε! Σας ευχαριστούμε! Τέλος, ένα πολύ μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στους συντελεστές της εκδήλωσης μας Μικρός Οδυσσέας - Little Odysseus & Alice Home, την Κυπριακή Ένωση Βιβλιοθηκονόμων και Επιστημόνων Πληροφόρησης (ΚΕΒΕΠ), το Ίδρυμα Χριστίνα Α. Αποστόλου / Christina Apostolou Foundation και το Υφυπουργείο Πολιτισμού - Deputy Ministry of Culture CY.

Με τις συνεργασίες γίνονται θαύματα και εμείς πιστεύουμε σε αυτά!!

Τέλος, αξίζει να αναφερθεί πως η δράση είναι αφιερωμένη στον καινοτόμο βιβλιοθηκονόμο Φίλιππο Τσιμπόγλου.

"Alice and Philippos travel the Library"

The University of Nicosia Library and Information Center was filled with happy voices and many happy faces! Our little friends spent a wonderful Sunday morning discovering the magic of books and reading through the program "Alice and Philippos travel the Library"

Through activities such as scavenger hunts, creative writing and bringing texts to life through theatre, the children attending had the opportunity to explore concepts such as critical thinking, literary creation and freedom of expression. Through this event we celebrated and honored International Children's Book Day & World Book Day, as we have been doing so eagerly for the past few years.

The event was executed with great success and received positive feedback. Library staff also received special congratulations from the attendees for its planning and execution. Approximately70 people attended the event. Furthermore, we were honoured to have our Director of Libraries invited to a TV show at RIK TV Channel as a representative of CALIS & the University of Nicosia Library to discuss about the event and the purpose of it. RIK Chanel also visited the Library and took shots of the event and the Library Building.

A big thank you to everyone who honored us with their presence, for the big hug that we felt yesterday, as well as for all the positive comments and the endless love we received! Thank you! Finally, a very big thank you to the organizers of our event Μικρός Οδυσσέας - Little Odysseus & Alice Home, Cyprus Association of Librarians – Information Scientists (CALIS), the Christina A. Apostolou Foundation and the Deputy Ministry of Culture CY.

Miracles happen through collaborations and we believe in them!!

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the action is dedicated to the innovative librarian Filippos Tsimpoglou.

Διημερίδα με αφορμή την Ημέρα Ευρωπαίων Συγγραφέων 2024

«Μια πολυπολιτισμική γιορτή παιδικών ιστοριών»

Στα πλαίσια της Ημέρας Ευρωπαίων Συγγραφέων (25/03/2024) η βιβλιοθήκη του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας σε συνεργασία με την ψηφιακή βιβλιοθήκη Read, ανταποκρινόμενες στο κάλεσμα της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής, οργάνωσαν διήμερη εκδήλωση με σκοπό την προβολή της πολυγλωσσικής κληρονομιάς της Ευρώπης και την προώθηση της φιλαναγνωσίας του λογοτεχνικού γραμματισμού σε παιδιά.

Στο πρώτο μέρος της εκδήλωσης που έλαβε χώρα στις 28 Μαρτίου, σε κλειστή συνάντηση, φοιτητές από το Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας και οι συντελεστές της εκδήλωσης ανάγνωσαν τις ιστορίες που επιλέχθηκαν. Ακολούθησαν εποικοδομητικές συζητήσεις για τα οφέλη της φιλαναγνωσίας και της μετάφρασης όπως και για τις προκλήσεις που μπορεί να παρουσιάζονται σε αυτή.

Το Σάββατο, 6 Απριλίου, ακολούθησε εκδήλωση που ήταν ανοιχτή για το κοινό. Τα παιδιά που συμμετείχαν παρακολούθησαν αφηγήσεις ιστοριών από την Κύπρο, την Αυστρία και την Ιαπωνία σε τέσσερις γλώσσες (Ελληνικά, Γερμανικά, Ιαπωνικά και Σουηδικά) από φοιτητές του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας.

Έπειτα τα παιδιά συμμετείχαν σε εργαστήρια δημιουργικής γραφής και εικονογράφησης. Φεύγοντας τους απονεμήθηκε δίπλωμα παρακολούθησης και τους προσφέρθηκε το βιβλίο της Κύπριας συγγραφέως «Το κόκκινο φόρεμα της Σαβέλ» ως αναμνηστικό δώρο.

Οι συντελεστές των τριων βιβλίων έδωσαν τη συγκατάθεσή τους ώστε τα βιβλία τους να χρησιμοποιηθούν και προβληθούν για τις ανάγκες της δράσης.

Τα βιβλία ήταν τα ακόλουθα:

Το Ιαπωνικό Παραμύθι και η αφήγηση του σε δύο γλώσσες συμπεριλήφθηκαν προς τιμή της Ιαπωνίας, χώρας που είχε φέτος την εποπτεία για τη συγγραφή του μηνύματος και τη φιλοτέχνηση της αφίσας για την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Παιδικού Βιβλίου.

Η κυρία Yoko Maejima, Deputy Head of Mission and Counsellor στην Πρεσβεία της Ιαπωνίας στην Κύπρο παρευρέθηκε στην εκδήλωση και πρόσφερε την πολύτιμη βοήθειά της στη Δρα. Παπακυριακού για τη μετάφραση του Ιαπωνικού παραμυθιού.

Two-day event on the occassion of European Authors' Day 2024

"A multicultural celebration of children's stories"

Within the framework of the European Authors' Day (25/03/2024), the University of Nicosia Library and Information Centre, in collaboration with Read digital library, responding to the call of the European Commission, organized a two-day event aiming to promote Europe's multilingual heritage and the love of reading among children.

In the first part of the event, which took place on March 28 in a closed meeting, students from the University of Nicosia and the contributors to the event read the selected stories. Constructive discussions followed about the benefits of literary literacy and translation, as well as the challenges that may arise.

On Saturday, April 6, an open event for the public followed. Participating children listened to storytelling sessions from Cyprus, Austria, and Japan in four languages (Greek, German, Japanese, and Swedish) by students of the University of Nicosia. Then, the children participated in creative writing and illustration workshops. Upon leaving, they were awarded a certificate of attendance and were given "The Red Dress of Savel" by Cypriot author Marina Michaelidou-Kadi as a souvenir gift.

The contributors of the three books gave their consent for their books to be used and displayed for the purposes of the event.

The Japanese fairy tale and its narration in two languages were included in honor of Japan, the country that was responsible for writing the message and the designing the poster for this year World Children's Book Day.

Mrs. Yoko Maejima, Deputy Head of Mission and Counselor at the Embassy of Japan in Cyprus, attended the event and offered her valuable assistance to Dr. Androula Papakyriakou for translating the Japanese fairy tale.

Ανακοίνωση της ΚΚυΒ για την απώλεια του Διευθυντή της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης Δρ. Φίλιππου Τσιμπόγλου

Με μεγάλη λύπη πληροφορηθήκαμε χθές 02 Φεβρουαρίου 2022, την αιφνίδια απώλεια του αγαπημένου φίλου και συνεργάτη, Δρ. Φίλιππου Τσιμπόγλου, Γενικού Διευθυντή της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης της Ελλάδας, τέως Διευθυντή της Βιβλιοθήκης του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου και «εμπνευστή» της κοινοπρακτικής συνεργασίας των Βιβλιοθηκών της Κύπρου, ο οποίος συνέβαλε ανεκτίμητα στην οργάνωση και εξέλιξη του κλάδου.

Ο Δρ. Φίλιππος Τσιμπόγλου, ο άνθρωπος των συνεργασιών και πολλαπλών συνεργειών στον χώρο των Βιβλιοθηκών στην Κύπρο και ευρύτερα, απετέλεσε για την Κοινοπραξία Κυπριακών Βιβλιοθηκών (ΚΚυΒ) «τον πρόδρομο» της σύστασης και οργάνωσης του πλαισίου λειτουργίας της. Ο Άνθρωπος που από το 2006 διέβλεψε την αναγκαιότητα συνεργατικής δράσης του συνόλου των Ακαδημαϊκών Βιβλιοθηκών (Δημοσίων και Ιδιωτικών) του τόπου, για κοινοπρακτικές συνεργασίες στον χώρο των ηλεκτρονικών συνδρομών και την ευρύτερη αλληλοϋποστήριξη μεταξύ τους. Ο Άνθρωπος που με τη φυσική του παρουσία απουσίαζε από την Κύπρο τα τελευταία χρόνια, αλλά που η φωτισμένη του προσωπικότητά και γνώση, απείχε μόνο ένα τηλεφώνημα ή μια online επικοινωνία!

Πρόσφατα, το Νοέμβριο του 2022, η ημερίδα που διοργανώθηκε από την ΚΕΒΕΠ και τη Βιβλιοθήκη Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας με κύριο ομιλητή τον Δρ. Φίλιππο Τσιμπόγλου, τον μέντορα και καθοδηγητή για την πλειοψηφία των επαγγελματιών του κλάδου στην Κύπρο, έδωσε την ευκαιρία για συγκέντρωση, συνέργειες, καθοδήγηση, οραματισμό και πληθώρα άλλων ενεργειών για διαβούλευση και προγραμματισμό μελλοντικών δράσεων.

Ο Δρ. Τσιμπόγλου, άφησε καθοριστικά το στίγμα του στην Κοινοπραξία Κυπριακών Βιβλιοθηκών, γεγονός που κάνει την αδόκητη απώλεια του ακόμη πιο δύσκολη για τα μέλη της, αλλά αφήνει ως παρακαταθήκη μέσα από την διαχρονική του δράση την ίδια την ύπαρξη της Κοινοπραξίας!

Σύσσωμο το ΔΣ της ΚΚυΒ εκφράζει τα ειλικρινή του συλλυπητήρια στην αγαπητή κ. Νίκη Τσιμπόγλου και στους οικείους του και ας είναι αιωνία η μνήμη του.

Θα έχουμε τα έργα και ημέρες σου φίλε Φίλιππε να μας θυμίζουν το πέρασμα σου από αυτό το σύντομο ταξίδι ζωής σου!

James Joyce Book Corner inaugurated at the UNIC Library

Enriching the cooperation between the University of Nicosia and the Embassy of Ireland in Cyprus

The James Joyce Book Corner, inaugurated at the Library and Information Centre of the University of Nicosia (UNIC), by Rector Philippos Pouyioutas and His Excellency the Ambassador of Ireland to Cyprus, Mr Conor Long, seeks to promote new avenues for cooperation and a deepening of the cultural exchange between the two parties. The inauguration, which coincides with the centenary of James Joyce’s Ulysses, welcomed a selection of books by the celebrated author to be placed on permanent display at the UNIC Library.

Welcoming His Excellency, the Ambassador, Rector Pouyioutas noted that “The James Joyce Book Corner will provide an excellent opportunity to our University community, to either discover or rediscover the profound works of one of the most significant writers of the 20^th Century”. He made special mention to the warm relationship between the two countries, as well as Ireland’s continuous support throughout the years, being one of the first countries to mobilize military personnel for the establishment of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), in 1964. Rector Pouyioutas also highlighted avenues of cultural cooperation open to the University and the Embassy that will further promote Irish culture and friendship more widely. He specifically suggested, amongst others, the organization of an annual Irish Cultural Day and an annual Irish Literature Day, as well as the screening of Irish films on campus.

His Excellency, Mr. Conor Long, expressed his gratitude for the level of commitment demonstrated by the University of Nicosia on organizing the book handover ceremony on campus, referring to James Joyce’s Ulysses as a book with a special connection to the Greek-speaking world on account of its Classical influences. Ambassador Long similarly extolled the historical connections between Cyprus and Ireland, underscoring how these have evolved within the European Union. In that respect, he underlined the importance of collaborations between education institutions in Ireland and Cyprus and how these can further reinforce collective knowledge.

Professor Paul Stewart, a Samuel Beckett Scholar at the Department of Languages and Literature, delivered a keynote address on the works of James Joyce. Professor Stewart outlined the deep literary tradition of Ireland in which James Joyce was immersed and which has projected the culture of Ireland throughout the world. Focusing on Joyce’s seminal work, Ulysses, Stewart highlighted the novel’s democratic and inclusionary vision that marries the specifics of Dublin life on a single day in 1904 with an encyclopaedic, global celebration of the mundane.

Prior to the inauguration ceremony, the Rector, the Senior Vice Rector, Professor Constantinos N. Phellas, the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Professor Panayiotis Angelides, and the Vice Rector for Faculty and Research, Professor Demetris Vrontis, had the opportunity to discuss with the Ambassador and his team, additional areas of collaboration between UNIC and Irish universities, including the possibility of joint academic programmes and research.

Ambassador Long completed his official visit by touring the UNIC Library and Information Centre, accompanied by the Embassy’s Public Diplomacy and Communications Officer, Mr Alexandros Kyriakides, the Rector, the Senior Vice Rector, the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, the Vice Rector for Faculty and Research, the Dean of the School of Education, Professor Elena Papanastasiou, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Klimis Mastoridis, the Director of Libraries, Ms Mina Charalambous, and other UNIC officials.
