Accessing E-Resources

How do I access the Library electronic resources?

If you are on-campus (within the University/ Intercollege premises, including Library building) access is open for all through the Library website and no passwords are required.

If you are off-campus (outside the University/ Intercollege premises) and you have an active Library account, you can connect with the University’s proxy server and gain access to electronic resources remotely.

[This service is only available for currently enrolled/ employed University/ Intercollege students and staff]

Off-campus access

How do I connect with the University’s proxy server to gain access remotely?

To access the Library e-resources remotely, you should connect with the University proxy server. Instructions to use proxy server with your web browser can be found below:

Change proxy settings on your computer:

o    Mozilla Firefox  (video or PDF)

o    Google Chrome (video or PDF)

o    Internet Explorer (video or PDF)

o    Microsoft Edge (video or PDF)

o    Mac browsers (video or PDF)

Change proxy settings on your tablet or smartphone:

  • For iOS devices (PDF)

  • For Android devices (PDF)

What is my username and password for the University’s proxy server?

When you change your proxy settings, the proxy server responds with a login window. If you have an active Library account, your proxy codes are:

Username: your Student ID Number* or Library User ID **

Password: your date of birth in reverse order (yr/mo/day*)

Example:

 Username: U000N0100

*Students use their student ID number

** Staff members (faculty, researchers, or administrative staff) use  the barcode number placed on their Library card

Password: 19900310 (for 10th March 1990*)

Password must be entered in the format yyyymmdd

       yyyy = year, i.e. 1990
       mm = month, i.e. 03 (March)
dd = day of the month, i.e. 10th  day of the month]

When do my off-campus access rights expire?

Your off-campus access rights expire with your Library account (at the end of every semester for students and part-time staff; at the end of every academic year for full-time staff). You can reactivate your Library account at the Circulation Desk (students should present their new Registration Form).

Does the proxy work with all the browsers available?

The proxy server is browser independent, that is, any browser should work with the University’s proxy solution. However, if you have problems that are not related to login information, please try a different browser.

Also, you may be unable to configure your browser, if you try from another company/institution where proxy is restricted it (e.g. your workplace).

It is advisable to have two browsers installed at any time on your computer. One browser should always be configured to use the proxy service for using Library e-resourses and the other one for surfing on the web (with no proxy configuration). In doing so, you can avoid configuring and un-configuring your browser all the time.

Does the proxy restrict my access to other webpages?

When you connect to the Internet through the proxy server you may be unable to load other webpages. If you have only one browser installed on your computer, when you finish your research in the Library e-resources you should change your proxy settings (un-configuring your browser) for no proxy connection.

Should I have cookies and Javascript enabled in my browser?

Make sure you have cookies and Javascript enabled in your browser and any pop-up blocker software disabled. These settings are located under:

Mozilla Firefox: Tools > Options

Internet explorer: Tools > Internet options

Google Chrome: Settings > Content settings

Microsoft Edge: Settings > Advanced settings

Safari: Safari menu > Preferences

What might be the problem if I am not able to have access from off-campus?

Your Library account has been expired. Contact the Library for renewal.

You may have entered an incorrect username and/or password. Repeat the process and make sure you type the correct credentials.

You may need to de-activate/shut down any firewall and/or antivirus software on the computer you are trying to access the proxy server from.

Some companies or Internet Providers may be using a proxy server to restrict Internet access. Because of this you may be unable to configure your Web browser to use the Remote Authentication Proxy Server simultaneously. In this case you will not be able to utilize this service.

For Further assistance contact the Library Help Desk at libithelp@unic.ac.cy. When writing to us, make sure you give us the Username and Password that you tried to use.
